IMVU is an original instant messaging tool that lets you chat with people from all over the globe in a 3D environment, instead of the plain, text-only chat room we're all used to.
In IMVU, your personality is not represented by just a simple nickname: it's a fully three-dimensional, Sims-style 3D character you can customize in many ways: skin color, hair style, clothes, pets, actions and animations, etc.
As unique as it sounds, IMVU works just like any other IM client. You start by registering a user account on the program's website, picking your avatar and customizing his or her appearance. Then simply join the network and look for some interesting people to chat with, either on your personal space or in one of the public chat rooms.
Besides just chatting, IMVU also lets you perform certain actions with your avatar. Just right-click on the character and you'll open a context menu with all the options, classified into several categories: movements, moods, expressions and more. IMVU also features a credits system that enables you to acquire new apparel for your avatar and customize the appearance of your hair, eyes and more.
IMVU is undeniably very original in certain aspects. But this originality sometimes makes it a bit confusing. For example, chats are hard to follow on IMVU's speech bubbles, so you'll eventually end up following the conversation in the text box – like any other IM client. Also, moving around the 3D space is difficult and sometimes frustrating, as it can get really slow depending on your internet connection.

Do not download this. I repeat, do NOT download this.My computer was swamped with ads and the person who died my computer said he's never had a computer with as much viruses as I did, and he said the culprit was some 3D game (IMVU!) If you want a healthy computer, imvu is not for you.
IMVU is a great place to hangout, meet people with similar interests, and even make a connection, but it can be perilous for any users who are not well-versed on how to protect themselves online. Have good virus protection before you download this program; COUNTLESS third-party sources have leaked viruses through IMVU's outdated client, through advertisements, free credit offers and even through the client itself, which offers little to no protection for its users. If you MUST use a credit card for online purchases DO NOT allow IMVU to save your information under ANY circumstances. Use PayPal wherever possible, and keep a close eye on your finances should you use the card in case of malicious activity. Furthermore, beware of the numerous password phishers and link-whores, who will attempt to get you to click on a link that will download a virus onto your hard drive. DO NOT TRUST STRANGE LINKS from ANYBODY, even people on your friends list, as accounts are compromised nearly everyday and repurposed to spread malware and adware. Have fun, but be smart. Be safe. Happy trails.
