If you want to play video or music files in just about any format, VLC media player is probably your answer.
Version 2 ("Twoflower") brings a new interface, faster decoding, support for more formats and the ability to play HD and BluRay. It still remains however the most stable, flexible and lightweight audio and video player around today. While other media players will play unusual formats after downloading a codec, or simply refuse to play things,
VLC media player handles tons of formats, from MPEG to FLV and RMBV files. Version 2 has seen some important additions too such as support for 10 bit codes plus multi-threaded decoding for H.264, MPEG-4/Xvid and WebM.
Also useful is the fact that you can use VLC media player to preview files you are downloading since it plays incomplete parts of video files. VLC media player is not just for video playback however. It also offers superb integration with video channel streaming services such as Channels.com giving you access to channels such as ESPN, Reuters and National Geographic. Just right-click or CMD-click on the playlist, select Services Discovery and Channels.com.
Channels.com will then appear in your VLC media player playlist. Click on it to reveal the the different categories of channels available. Click on the category you want and a drop down list of all available channels appears in VLC media player. Just click on the channel you want to watch and streaming should begin almost immediately.
VLC media player also has great hotkey support and if you take the time to learn the shortcuts so it can be controlled without touching your mouse. If you're watching DVDs or video files through it, this is not an issue. For music, it plays more or less any file and features an equalizer and playlist creation. VLC media player isn't as intuitive as iTunes as a media manager, but it's a much more flexible player in terms of file formats. You can even use VLC to convert your files, and on top of all the formats and physical media it will play, many streaming protocols and TV capture cards are supported.
VLC media player makes it easy to add subtitles to your video files too - just add the SRT file to the folder where your video is kept, and it will automatically play with subtitles.
Finally, the interface in VLC media player has been somewhat improved in version 2 although it remains strictly functional. However, you can download skins to completely change VLC media player's appearance. The preferences menu is comprehensive without being overwhelming, and there is extensive documentation online.
VLC Media Player is quite simply the best multimedia application for Windows and Mac. It plays just about anything, hassle free - what more could you need?

VLC has never failed me before. The new update, however, just can't handle playlists for some reason. Whenever I watch a playlist, it starts lagging like crazy. I hope they can release an update that fixes this ASAP.
VLC is simply amazing! Dear friends, are you interested in knowing why I am a fond lover of VLC media player 1.0.5? Well, for that you will have to go through my review. Don’t worry as I’m not going to talk about common things. Most of us are well acquainted that this is one of the few versatile media players that has the capability to play most of the available file formats! In fact when it comes to playing audio files, video files, media files or playlist files; I always prefer VLC (VideoLAN Client) player over others. Do you know why? For the simple reason; it comes bundled with plethora of other miraculous features which most popular media players fall short of. Apart from supporting multiple audio, video formats and streaming protocols, this excellent player is extremely software environment friendly too. That means, it gets easily installed on various operating systems like Windows, Android, Linux or Solaris without mess. Rather, in my view it is this quality of VLC that deserves a score of five on five. Its cross-platform utility gives me the privilege of transporting my audio or media files from one device to another without worrying much about their format, support and compatibility issues. What’s more? I can download this media server from anywhere in the world, with just the click of a button. The only prerequisite needed is the availability of an internet connection on the concerned electronic device. Being open source software it is completely free of cost too. However, the list of its benefits and specialized features does not end here. Rather my fascination stems from the very fact that when I downloaded this freeware I did not require any of the regulating plug-ins since it itself included many free decoding and encoding libraries. Simply brilliant! VLC feature which I like the most Yet, what I personally appreciate about VLC player is its ability to allow users to make sound adjustments in decibels and hertz according to their own requirements. The utility feature is available in the ‘Adjustments and Effects’ section under the tools menu. Here a person is bestowed with multitude of options which give him or her option of adjusting audio -video effects and consequently synchronizing them. By first enabling graphic equalizer and then doing alteration in the Preamp, I can always change the wavelength of the song being played without even disturbing the volume section of my computer. This way I thoroughly enjoy songs at my own pace and speed. If you wish you too can use this tool to fine tune the already recorded song according to your own specifications. Isn’t it amazing feature? Now, I leave it to you to experiment with Spatializer section to see how it works! Try the latest version of VLC media player and share your experiences with me.
